Systemic VasculitisInformation

Birmingham Vasculitis
Activity Score (BVAS)

The BVAS is a validated tool for measuring disease activity in systemic vasculitis. This page explains what it measures and where to access the official version.

Why this page has no calculator

The BVAS form and its scoring rules are copyrighted by Oxford University Innovation Limited. Using the official tool requires a licence. The calculator previously on this site was not based on the current form, so we have removed it. We will not offer a BVAS calculator unless it is built on the current form under a licence.

What the BVAS measures

The BVAS measures activity, not organ damage. Irreversible damage is assessed separately with the Vasculitis Damage Index (VDI).

How to access the official tool

The BVAS and VDI are available to licence through Oxford University Innovation's Clinical Outcomes team. Licence applications are made through their platform. For licensing questions, contact healthoutcomes@innovation.ox.ac.uk.

The Luqmani Group offers case-based training for the BVAS and VDI, online or in person, to support valid use in studies. Contact bvasvdi@ndorms.ox.ac.uk.
